    The cost is not just the price. When you invest in reupholstering your furniture, your money is well spent if you love the style of the furniture. A new piece of furniture from a furiniture store gerneraly is less of a value and really costs more money in the long run. 

    Let's say, you find a furniture style you really like as much as the furniture you already own, and the new couch, sofa or chair is less money to buy new at the store or online than it is to have it re-done.   Now compare the value, if the retail price of the furniture is less than it will cost to reupholster it is most likely made of pressboard and or another cheap material, not to mention any level of workmanship.  Or, If the furniture retails for more than it will cost to recover, when considering todays level of materials and workmanship, even at the high end, it still may not be as durable as what you have.
